Opportunity ...

by Bug Bug Milliken

Mews, Opportunity is a strange thing. It is a set of circumstances that is right for the time. It can be just about anything. It can be a chance to go somewhere, a chance to learn something, or a chance to do something.

For example, it could be going to a large observatory to see something special. My mewmie did this once, and she got into lots of trouble. Hee hee. She called and told her boss she was taking off sick. But she and sister went to Griffeth Observatory to see a total solar eclipse. They had a lovely day, and were interviewed by the newsmen that were there. The whole country saw them on TV that evening. The next day mewmie’s boss said, “I thought mew were sick.” Mewmie told him she was taking a mental health day, and that opportunities like that only came once in a lifetime. That is one of the problems with opportunity. Often it does only come around once, and if mew fail to grab it when it does, it is gone forever.

Then there are the things that happen in your life that are great opportunities, but mew do not realize until years later that it is one. Again, I will use my mewmie as an example. She was given the opportunity to take piano lessons when she was a furry little girl. And loving music, she took the lessons and learned to play well. It wasn’t until she was an adult that she realized what a rare and wonderful opportunity her parents had given to her.

There are so many opportunities that we can give one another. I am always reminded of humans who send food to other humans in third world countries. I have often heard it said that mew can send them food and feed them fur a day, but that if mew teach them to plant the food, then mew will feed them fur a lifetime. Another opportunity that we can give to others is to teach them to read. If mew learn to read, the world is open to you in so many ways.

But I think the opportunity I would give to another if I could that be the gift of music, the opportunity to learn to read music and/or to play an instrument. Music is something that no one can ever take away from you. It is something that reaches to the very depths of our souls, and speaks to us without words. My mewmie has often said that her music will be with her forever. If she was to go blind, she could still play. If she was to go deaf, she could still hear the music in her head. I t will always be there.

It has been said that music soothes the savage beast. I know it calms me. I love to hear my mewmie sing and play.

Yes, I think the opportunity I would like to give is the gift of music. Will you take it?
