This Old Guitar

( Lyrics and Music by John Denver )

by Servo

As she sat on the front porch gliding back and forth in the old wooden swing she could almost hear those hateful words she and the young man had exchanged only half an hour ago. The argument was silly she realized now but now it was too late. The young man was gone and she was left to wrestle with her thoughts and all those terrible words she had spoken. What was so bad about being separated for just a short time while he went out in the world to find his fame and fortune. She was being stubborn when she told him if he left this time she did not ever want to see his face or hear his voice ever again. Why had she said those things when she loved this man more than the thought of tomorrow? She had told him that she hated him. She said that that stupid old ratty guitar had come between them for the last time. The words rang in her ears and the tears ran down her cheeks now stinging her eyes. Her heart was filled with sadness and regret. She could hear the phone ringing inside the house and she heard her mother pick it up. Her mother asked the caller to hold the line and walked to the porch and smiled at her daughter and told her the phone was for her. Slowly she walked to the phone thinking that it was a friend calling to find out how she was since her young man had left. She picked up the receiver and heard the sweetest voice in the world singing...

This old guitar taught me to sing a love song
It showed me how to laugh and how to cry
It introduced me to some friends of mine
And brightened up some days
It helped me make it through some lonely nights
Oh, what a friend to have on a cold and lonely night

This old guitar gave me my lovely lady
It opened up her eyes and ears to me
It brought us close together
I guess it broke her heart
It opened up the space for us to be
What a lovely place and a lovely space to be

This old guitar gave me my life my living
All the things you know I love to do
To serenade the stars that shine
From a sunny mountainside
Most of all to sing my songs for you
I love to sing my songs for you
Yes, I do, you know
I love to sing my songs for you

They were married the next day. There would never be another separation. The old guitar that she had accused of causing the argument and tearing them apart had bound them together forever. They would laugh when they remembered that argument and how that guitar was there to bring them back together. Music is a very powerful thing... just like love.
