What I Have Learned in the Writer’s Society

by SL BugBug Milliken

When I first joined the group, I was not at all sure that I could write well. After all, I was following in the paw prints of writing sisfurs Wallie Miranda who wrote the incredibly moving ‘The Summer of Goodbye’, Rambley-Bambley who wrote ‘Old One Ear’ and ‘The Box’, and the famous BabyCat, who in her last days penned ‘The Last Hunt’.

As a small kitten I watched them many times put pen to paper and write the most incredible and beautiful stories. I often dabbled in writing myself, but I thought to myself, "Wow! I could never write like that!" But they always encouraged me. "Of course mew can do it BugBug," they would say. "Mew just have to practice, practice, practice."

Well, I did write a couple of pretty good stories fur Kittiengarten. But after that I wasn’t sure how to practice, and I didn’t seem to have any real inspiration. Then I joined the Writer’s Society, where we are challenged each month to write stories, essays and poems. I soon realized this was the perfect chance to practice my writing. And even though these were just writing exercises, I found that the more I wrote, the more I wanted to write.

Then finally one day, real inspiration hit, and I wrote what I thought was a great story, ‘The Miracle of Little Cat’. I was so excited! I finally realized that writing, I mean really writing, was something that came from deep inside you, something that came from your heart and your soul.

And I realized also the power, the incredible power, that comes from the pen, that comes from putting words onto paper. A famous person said, "The pen is mightier than the sword." And I can see now that this is indeed true. I have really been bitten by the writing bug. I now understand why my sisters wrote. They couldn’t stop themselves. Nor can I.
