Sugarcat Learning

by MGD

I have learned so much about diabetes these past two years, and it amazes me how much more there still is to learn. When you have a chronic illness like diabetes, being pro-active helps a lot, and helps the vet too, since it becomes obvious you and your human are really committed to keeping the disease at bay. It is amazing to see the variety of treatments offered by different vets and the types of food used by the different diabetic cats. Unfortunately, I am one that is very hard to regulate, so I am always looking to learn more, and see if I can't get my sugars to stabilize at a good level. High protein diets are best, but that can cause some kidney problems, especially in an older cat, so it is a delicate balance of what to feed. The hardest thing I had to learn was that food only gets served twice a day, no more free feeding, and that was a very tough lesson. I hope to continue to learn more, and hopefully some day a cure will be found for feline diabetes.
