Our Incredible Journey
by Whitey
Do you remember the story of three animals and their incredible journey as the searched for their young master who had moved to a new home? I would like to tell you of three other animals who help and love one another, although they have a home and are not lost. This is a true story. When my humans rescued me as a poor little stray living in a large field behind their house, I was very timid and reluctant to accept this offer of a new home. I had been abandoned once and feared it could happen again. Also, in this home their were two dogs - and this frightened me most of all.
One, a Beagle, was noisy and had chased me more than once as she hunted rabbits in my field. The other was a very large and old Shepherd mix who didn't appear at all friendly. But the days were getting shorter and I knew that soon the ground would be frozen and white and I would probably not survive another winter outdoors. I made my way to the feeding place where a bowl of food was placed for me each day. Cautiously, I approached the door. I put one white paw over the sill - and I was inside!
At first, Beagle delighted in chasing me. Then I realized she wanted to play and if I ran up a tree or on a chair she would just wag her tail and say,"Come down,Whitey! I want to play some more!" The big monster dog snapped at me once when I got too near her nose, but after that ignored me and pretended I wasn't there. She liked to lick my left-over food dishes and got to like me as time went on.
Now, all three, Beagle girl, Big Old One and I go for walks in the field together. I am never afraid because I know they will protect me and I will do the same for them. My claws are fierce! I hide in the long grasses and JUMP out at my sisters and they laugh at me and wag their tails. We are such good friends now - and are just like those two dogs and the cat in the Incredible Journey.
