The Right Choice
by Servo
As he sat waiting anxiously on the hard chair provided in the waiting room for his potential employment position, Servo wondered if it were all worth the inconvenience. After all, he already had a job and his family was well taken care of. He was able to support his wife and family and they never went without the food they needed and they had a nice place to live. He turned his gaze to the fat secretary who was buffing her sharp claws in between answering the phone and greeting anyone who walked into the room with an indifferent smile and he thought to himself that he hoped everyone here was not like that. As the minutes that seemed like hours passed he found his mind drifting back to when he first found his job. It was much different than now. He was not looking for employment then. He was just a young kitty wandering around happily without a care in the world. A smile came across his face as he mused about his boss. Would this boss be the same he wondered. Servo caught sight of himself in the mirror on the wall and noticed that his fur looked ruffled. Oh no! Would the fat secretary notice him smoothing his fur and see just how nervous he was? He wanted to look just perfect for the interview and he knew this boss would notice any fur out of place. He felt the eyes of the whole room on him as he slowly moved his paw up to his ear and smoothed down that stray fur. The butterflies in his stomach had turned to large pterodactyl type creatures and were making him feel like a war was going on inside him. The room began to feel hotter than it was before and he could feel the sweat bubbling up on his brow. He looked around to see if anyone had noticed him. Everyone seemed to be in his or her own private world. Servo saw one kitty reading and looking quite confident. One kitty was flirting with the secretary and another was talking on his phone. They were all there for the same reason. They all wanted that job. The office door opened and a kitty walked out looking as if he had just been swallowed up by the world. Servo felt sorry for this kitty and wanted to run and hug him and tell him it would be ok but he new it would not be proper. The secretary smiled at the big boss kitty as he instructed her to call the next applicant. The big boss kitty surveyed the room and looked at Servo with hard steel eyes that seemed to peer in to the back of his head. At that moment Servo hoped it would not be his name that was called as he sat stiff with trepidation in his chair. He was relieved when the flirting kitty’s name was called. As the flirting kitty stepped to the door Servo decided this was not for him. His job was a good job. His boss smiled at him and greeted him with a good morning hello every day. He was happy with his job and it was enough to support his family in comfort. So what if this new job would have paid twice as much. His heart told him that it was not worth that feeling of anguish. Servo picked up his things and walked out the door. He smiled as the large butterflies in his stomach faded away. He knew he had made the right decision and he was happy.
