An Ode to Captain Fearless

by Sinead O'Kitty

Captain Fearless, my squirrel friend,
You entertained me till your sorry end.
Tail held high, you scampered by,
While I followed you with my eyes.

I chirped and chittered, but could not chase,
‘Cause Mama kept me cooped up inside her place.
I heard her laugh at your silly stunts,
And you even let her talk to you once.

Jumping high, from tree to tree,
I envied you, because you were free.
I watched you walk across wires so small
I even prayed that you wouldn’t fall.

Then one sad day, when Mama wasn’t home,
I saw you climbing where you shouldn’t have gone.
Inside the big gray transformer you went,
With a great big zap, to squirrel heaven you were sent.

Sparks flew up, ozone smoke arose,
And the scent of burning fur wafted past my nose.
The lights went out in our whole great big house,
And what was left of you was smaller than a mouse.

Captain Fearless, your family grieved for a week,
And finally we heard your baby squirrels squeak.
Then Siouxsie and I watched with delight
as your children cavorted in the summertime night.
