Homeless Kitty

By Playful

It was a hot, sunny day in the middle of summer here in Catifurnia. Meowmie had the A/C on to help keep the heat out of the house. I was glad that we had that. Last year, we had a real small A/C and it only kept a little area of the house cool. This year, we had a larger unit. It was so cool inside, I almost didn't pay attention to anything outdoors.

But being a cat, not paying attention to something, especially the outdoors, was not in my genetic make-up. What happened? I first smelled an unfamiliar odor. The odor was something like a cat. But it was not like any cat I ever knew. Hmmm. This was going to take some nibbles of my cat food in my dish as I mulled this over.

As I was munching, I came up with the brilliant idea of looking out the window. I thought I would saunter on over there and see what I could see. It was black and white, well, black with a white stripe down its middle. It was kind of squatty looking, too. I mewed to it. I also hissed. It just nibbled on some of the stuff beneath an outdoor tree. It also had a fluffy tail. Maybe it was a Maine Coon. I was sure it was a furreign cat.

I mewed, again. It never looked up. But Meowmie noticed me mewing, so she came over. And said, "Playful, that is a skunk."

I thought, "what is that?"

But Meowmie opened the door and was out before I got an answer. The strange animal ran off. Meowmie came in and said it was a real wild animal, but not a wild cat. I guess I was happy, cause I would like to think that any type of cat, wild or not, would want to be my friend.

Well, I nefur say dis one again. And I can only guess that it wasn't a cat. It couldn't be my friend. Meowmie also told me that if it sprayed me, and that's what this wild cat type does…I would have to take a tomato juice bath. I do not know why I would have to take any kind of bath but she explained that these skunks had a nasty smell in their spray and it was their way of purrtecting themselves. I can understand purrtection. But I couldn't fathom a bad smell. Guess I had to trust the Meowmie's word for that.

It was sad that I couldn't befriend this animal but I would always ask Meowmie to put some food out fur her or him. And I would be grateful that I had a home that was sheltered and not having to live in the forest. But it seemed the skunk liked being in the wild more than anywhere else, so we were both happy.
